| 2 ° 20 'N, 102 ° 21' E 10 September 2010, 15:12 At three o'clock this afternoon we finally arrived at our hostel in Malacca to. As previously written not quite the trip went smoothly. At the bus station of Malaya even as we played with the idea but very Malaka store and immediately travel to Singapore. We even had our bus tickets to Singapore when we (due to lack of beds there) but still decided to stay overnight here in Malaya. And freshen up the city so quickly but, because we have less than 24 hours. That's what little for a city that historically important for Malaysia. Anyway, little choice. The city was also not so great, at least, the old part no. I think that our walk today is largely seen. Best fun. The first thing we noticed was the 'Stadt Huys, a first proof of the fact that the Dutch have been here a while, at the time that colonies were still hip. The presence of a Dutch square "and a real miniature windmill give us a light feel at home. Further, we only walked quickly in China Town and visit that feeling again largely disappears. Very nice, indeed. Since the weekend (and in Islamic Malaysia starts already on Friday), is one of the main streets a big market going. On the night market (or 'pasar malam') is a hodgepodge of knickknacks and lots of food available. We have sinned against ourselves to a few snacks, including a spiral type of potato chips on a stick and a pancake waffle with corn jelly. Furthermore, at the last moment a pendant for Judica bought a new pair of bracelets. When we settled down for a cup of coffee we were helped by a friendly European lady. Her accent betrayed her origin, and a minute later we were English boating and we talked more humble in our own lingo. She appeared with her husband, a kind ecokroeg to have started as an experiment. The coffee tasted good and I heard about the tea Judica not complain. And oh! They had spritsen with the coffee! After snacking, we still only some 'decent' food ordered. At a Chinese eatery that certainly in the Lonely Planet is (witness the guide reading passers) we have after 10 minutes for the door in the row have been waiting for the local specialty "chicken rice balls' with steamed chicken and bean sprouts eaten. Not bad, certainly not. Definitely enough to make our night in us that peculiar (but not unpleasant) hostel without hunger to get through. michiel Dewit | Tags: fair , Chicken rice balls , Malacca , Malaysia Posted in Malaysia , Melaka | No Comments » 2 ° 13 'N, 102 ° 15' E 10 September 2010, 14:36 Dear Friends weblog, here's a message from Melaka Sentral. I'm sitting on a grass green plastic bucket seat for the local branch of McDonalds. Our luggage is behind me in a corner and I'm waiting for Judica. She has just gone to a busticketbureau tickets to Singapore for the next day to arrange. No idea how long that lasts, but it is certainly not a sinecure. A short story about our bus trip from KL to Malacca this morning on time, we vacated our room this morning. It was certainly not a large room, so it was fitting and measuring to what those big backpacks and ourselves at the same time a prominent place in the room to give. But it did. At the 7-eleven brought back breakfast (kaya and chocolate buns) and immediately doorgestiefeld to the stop of the shuttle bus us to the temporary interstate Coach Station 'would bring. So far everything went smoothly. The bus was also neat, but once on the bus it was unfortunately a bit wrong. I will not be long in suspense account and not the hot work back run: how many things there are wrong, the things not go as planned, which smack of fraud or stupidity come down are still the most interesting to read. Well, we have been scammed. The bus tickets that we have a few days back on the same bus station bought at 'kaunter' 52 appeared this morning when counter 24 worth exactly nothing. The woman who helped us last time (and by colleagues in Malay hear hindsight obviously was despised for what they did) appeared rather to have juggled and the fact that nobody there this morning at 52 loketje was (they are also all lower onderneminkjes; behind every box is another private busbedrijfje hiding) made us soon painfully clear that there is some structure in the game must have been. After having vented some anger into constructive action but eventually passed. At the makeshift mega bus station was also a police presence and after some urging, was one of the uniformed friends willing to matter to us at the bottom of it. We had ourselves quite a lot of the local tables and walls seen with some relief we noticed that the policeman was sent out shamelessly. When he too was tired, he hit the proverbial fist on the table counter 24 and demanded of them, though hullie denied involvement in all keys, they would look for a solution. All this of course in Malay. End result: an extra charge of 6 ringgit after we were still on the bus and still half an hour earlier than planned. We are happy. Three hours later I am now at the bus station of Malacca and fortunately there is still a disappointment to collect the same: we wanted the day after the bus traveled to Singapore, so we have a full day in Melaka would have, but there are no more tickets available. The result is that we already morgenmiddaag at 2 o'clock. That leaves us little time. But do not worry: we make the most of it again. We have already arrived in Malaya and that is not as obvious as shown imagined. michiel Dewit | Tags: bus , Malaysia , Melaka Posted in Malaysia , Melaka | No Comments » 3 ° 9 'N, 101 ° 42' E 7 September 2010, 16:17 Yesterday we were already in Kuala Lumpur, but a lot of courage to do great things we did not. That gehobbel with that minivan was especially me clothes sit in the cold. From the intense cornering at the beginning of the ride was what upset my stomach and hit the anti-allergiepil the night before had managed to make me very drowsy. Anyway, today a new opportunity. The night in our hostel was colder than expected. Of economy we had no A / C ordered, but even with just the fan, we got the best cold tonight. We are clearly adapted to the climate (or just zeikerds). This morning we had breakfast at 7-eleven, because we were reluctant to make stuff out of it. Just a few white dots filled with kaya (coconut eierjam) and let's go. For lunch we met with Anton, a White Russian who we had met on Koh Tao. To achieve that time what to do to have, but once we decided to explore Times Square. We had understood that many Times Square storey market building, but we arrived a bit cheated them out: it was just a huge shopping mall to be like KL so many rich. In this mall is not normally much to do and we expect little. Judica treated himself to a tasty sandwich from Subways (because of American restaurants in Times Square is no shortage) we ordered and then step through to the 6th floor. The map was indicated that the building has a 'theme park' was. That we had in Penang also sometimes seen standing and then turned to gambling to go. Even so, I'm curious to Judica swept to a surprise: a part of the skyscraper appeared between the 5th and the 10th floor to be opened up to a real indoor theme park inns. Besides various rides and attractions there was a real (not childish!) Roller coaster. We have seen him in action, but it looked quite frightening. Of course there was also an old-fashioned amusement park in the gambling hall and this time we could not resist. We have purchased tokens for 3 euros and are loosened on the devices. First a few games Streetfighter 4 against each other. I Judica completely preserved, ha! Then the air hockey table contained: 6-5 Judica. And to top it all off we both make a few laps on the bike being tearing. With 150 by the turn ... that made us remember the good old days in Vietnam ... Around noon we Anton picked up the monorail. Also a fantastic invention. I was once crazy. Small metro in the air on a few concrete beam balance. Much less ugly than the large metro viaducts. Anyway, so Anton: gray and he saw what was clearly less happy than on Koh Tao. We have tried to cheer him and his purpose but a piece of the city walked towards the Petronas towers. Oddly enough corpses to 4 after the world's largest towers underneath it if you is not so high. They reach almost half a kilometer into the sky, but would also continue for 100 meters high. The human eye is not so clearly more critical over 'very high'. Erin, we could unfortunately not, but around the towers are a large shopping center and park built. There we looked around us and amazed at the many upscale boutiques. In the park we found some peace and we could see the towers from a distance even check. (Addition of Judica: The park was also a kind of pool space, blue tiles, clean water, you know the drill. There were two female guards at and I could not even walk into the water. As I climbed towards the stern was whistled and rejected. No idea why not. In the same swings later, I swung back and forth twice before headscarf-wearing officer motioned me to go off of the swing.) After a cup of coffee at Starbucks, we Anton back on the monorail to go home and we put them a little at a large electronics mall long run to the last ringgit that I still had my birthday on it. Our new camera produces impressive amounts of bytes and for that all have to take, I now have a beautiful Ferrari-red hard drive purchased. It is a gem. Oh, and we still have a small fold-speaker on the head. Last night we ate at my intercession Indian Judica and tonight should choose: it was Chinese. In a food court near the hostel, located in China-town we got for little tasty, free-pepper rice with chicken dished. We feasted on them and then the quiet evening spent in the room. michiel Dewit | Tags: Anton , Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia , Monorail , Park , Petronas Posted in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia | No Comments » 3 ° 9 'N, 101 ° 42' E 6 September 2010, 14:33 A winding road led us down to the highway far. The mini-van that transported us was all not full, 3 guests next to the driver and passenger. Luxury so. Michael has been in the highlands suffer from a form of hay fever (we think). Now I had just as simple sedative antihistamine purchased, there is your duff and that is exactly what I want. So last night he took a tablet and the whole night no stuffy nose or sore eyes had. This morning on the bus, he has also slept well and after we checked he was still in one ear. The side effects are very long time. Yesterday we had quickly booked a guesthouse, we were there today and found the rooms below par and the people very unfriendly. Looking for something else. Our budget (12.50 to 15 euros) in other countries enough to get a beautiful room. At this moment we are in a guesthouse Gribus, mini room, sagging mattress, about 8 cm thick, about their own private bathroom where you stand on the bathroom to shower. Pleasant is different, but yes ... it costs nothing. Internet is always a good counselor, so we just looked at the reviews. There are several customers who have been here last year suffered from the 'bed bugs' or bedbugs. I thought that did not exist! We stay here tonight and go tomorrow to rethink whether we stay here longer, or 20 euros for a nice room 30 meters away look. GRRRR budgeting! Furthermore, we just walked around this afternoon and tonight. We are close to a nice little market and the Petronas Towers have been seen at a distance. Even a simple meal at a local restaurant (with 2 people for 3 euros including drinking, that is or cheap). Tomorrow we meet Anton, our friend from Belarus who has gone to KL to study here. Thanks so cozy and we'll also look at one of the largest technical centers (things with a plug so) of Malaysia. Michael falls asleep next to me again ... Good night, sleep tight, do not let the bed bugs bite! juutsel | Tags: antihistamine , winding road , Kuala Lumpur , sleep , dirty room Posted in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia | No Comments » 4 ° 28 'N, 101 ° 23' E 5 September 2010, 12:59 Today's latest adventure in the series of Mangrove Jungle Judy and Mike. Our journey leads us to the beautiful highlands of Malaysia's most beautiful jungle. After a varied healthy breakfast (tea and chocolate cake on the bed) we did not have much inspiration to get out of bed. Only around 11 hours there was some movement in the case. Good, so a morning chill. We wanted a walk today through the area, but the motto was everything to nothing. After having drawn up a plan we went on the road. On to the Robinson Waterfall. Way we NLse against acquaintances who yesterday were along on the tour. They said the little waterfall and suggested best was polluted with waste. We let us not put off and went. After a small flow was then a path walked. We had good energy and walked by. There was also an option for path 8, we tried but 1.35 km uphill where the roots provide a path was really too much. Walk down was even harder. So we continue on the beaten track and there we heard water fall and found the real waterfall with two German girls there. The four of us decided to walk further trail 9a. According to the LP had a passable path. It became increasingly difficult begaanbaarder happy but went downhill. The scenery was beautiful and because the four of us were it was also a lot safer (in case of emergency there were two and a path to help the person stay). It was the most natural experience and very cool to own a small group in the jungle walking, climbing trees, green smell, hear sounds. At the end of eht path we arrived at a small village with several plantations. From there it was another hour to the main road. The LP suggested d eBUS payback. Any inquiry taught us that knew niemadn When the bus drove. It pulled like a truck and he pointed to the richitng that we had. A small nod "yes" on my part and he stopped. We had just now lifted without mean? We jumped back of the truck and Michiel because long legs in front. Within ten minutes we had arrived in the village. We wanted to give something like the man but he would not accept it. The kindness itself and that we may be more accustomed. After that anything taken for breakfast tomorrow in the van and after a hot shower I sit relax and enjoy a cup of tea. My legs are tired and I miss the greenery around me. Tomorrow back to a big city, watch that again was. juutsel | Tags: green , jungle , hiking , waterfall Posted in Cameron Highlands , Malaysia | No Comments » 4 ° 28 'N, 101 ° 23' E 4 September 2010, 15:35 Michael has already written about what we have done, but unfortunately not explained why we had so few pictures. Heelaas vanonze camera battery was not charging the extra battery and sat in another bag. Fortunately, there were more people from our hostel along and I just still pictures gleaned anything. The following additions to what is therefore still the previous pictures. It is beautiful here We also went through an indigenous tribe have been (houses of corrugated iron and simply in jeans). The original way of hunting there with small arrows (cena bier with skewers, exactly the same actually) by a tube to be shot. We could also try here. After the shock of riding in the jeep was difficult to keep quiet but it was very cool. About your jeep tour Michiel no word exaggerated. We are now somewhat used to it, but sometimes the jeep leaned far to one side that I only recently sat down with Michael on his lap in the hope of some more balance. That made little difference, but what better than pressed against the window to sit. juutsel | Posted in Cameron Highlands , Malaysia | No Comments » 4 ° 28 'N, 101 ° 23' E 4 September 2010, 12:27 It is probably not a respectful name for (apparently) the world's largest flower, but to be honest, he stinks. Up close, I have not smelled, but it certainly was not the smell of rose petals all fly to the large brown-red case attracted. Very special to see, especially knowing that Rafflesia's only once in their life for a few days flowering. Incidentally, it was not so easy to find these stinky flower. This morning we were picked up with an old Land Rover, one without tread on the tires. We were not worry. Three minutes later the paved road ended and we got the signal 'offroad'. It sounded exciting, but has proved rather frightening. Without profile had the 4x4 sometimes quite difficult to cross the narrow, muddy and especially furrowed path to get there. Twenty minutes and many firmly squeezed hands later we arrived at the end of the road. The guide told us, perhaps for us to rub that in some parts of the year for the path to the jeeps were impassable and people than the entire trip (without waders) were up dunk. Well said relativised our drab stage soon to continue with the walking part. That was bad. We made a nice jungle hike with some scrambling and slipping, but without all the other annoying that such a trip can make (such as mosquitoes and flies). At the end of the walk we were face to face with the Rafflesia, almost as if the flower from the enchanted forest from the Efteling was picked. The leathery petals and orange-brown color called a papier-mâché image. Of course we kept tidy the flower, but the picture we could still use it ... Anyway, the rest of the day we have some near rondgekard. A bite to eat at a local Indian restaurant (lekker!), a visit to the local tea factory of BOH and look around at a butterfly farm and strawberry farm. At the butterfly farm, they had but a few exotic butterflies insects: beetles never seen such great! Of course we have some fresh zomerkoninkjes (with whipped cream and honey!) Consumed for now uitgevloerd a reasonable plan for the evening. Perhaps with a few people in the pub and have a talk about flowers that smell of cheese and a rhino beetles? michiel Dewit | Tags: Strawberries , Cameron Highlands , Daytrip , malaysia , Rafflesia , Tea Posted in Penang | No Comments » 4 ° 28 'N, 101 ° 23' E 3 September 2010, 13:19 Faster than light or at least faster than my stomach could handle, we raced this morning with a minivan from Penang to Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands . When we bought our ticket, we believed an additional 5 hours on the trip will do, but after only 3 hours of travel we were already at 9 am on the sidewalk. Yesterday evening, we quickly booked a guesthouse, for our peace of mind, but also because we are immediately deposited by the minivan could be. The woman that's us at Kang Travellers Lodge was received warmly. The lodge is a real backpacker spot: small rooms, shared showers and lots of place to sit and chat. In the back is a bar with pool table and place for a real campfire. It all looks very cozy. Now I Judica with some German backpackers to chat, but this afternoon she was not so active. I do not though. Last night we slept very badly, partly because we knew we had to stand very early on: you will sleep in with unrest that keeps you awake all night. After a quick lunch but we are also here on an ear lie. Our room is small (actually only one bed), but clean and the coolness here makes sleep a little easier. This afternoon we walked around. We have booked a day trip tomorrow, so we quickly much of the surroundings to see. We will include the jungle in search of giant flowers . It is rainy season here, so I hope we keep it dry. Anyway it is not very warm (because high), so we will us less good weather to dress. The evening meal we enjoyed at another Indian restaurant. Tandoori Chicken with Naan bread, again with all the hands to eat. It remains somewhat complicated, but it was certainly nice. Soon some chat, maybe play some pool and then set sail to be fit for our adventure tomorrow. michiel Dewit | Tags: Cameron Highlands , Lodge , malaysia , Tanah Rata Posted in Cameron Highlands , Malaysia | No Comments » 5 ° 26 'N, 100 ° 19' E 2 September 2010, 16:45 After yesterday dressed in a low walk this morning we decided to shorts and sandals to do. Everything is well maintained and paved, why should we? After another breakfast (a roll with Kaya, sort of paste of egg and coconut, very nice) on the bus. After a freezing cold bus trip (the air is so high that Judica dressing when the bus goes) we arrive at the entrance of the national park. We write to us (it provides hope that they keep track of who's in the park) and start the hike. Soon we come to the conclusion that the beautiful path that does not lead us into the park through the park. After a kilometer the path for slipper drag assigns impassable and we decide to reverse. Stupid, but still we are now dressed in jungle. Once back at the entrance of the park 'discover' we have a small visitor center with a few models, stuffed animals and fancy computer presentations. Fun and perhaps a surrogate for the things we have not seen in the park. The scorching heat but we walk back a bit, towards the seafront. Or at least that's what we think. The walk seems to be much longer than expected and after a little along the way to have run and the first raindrops have cashed the bus but we decide to take. On the beach promenade are all luxurious, expensive resorts, restaurants and glossy hotels peppered. We walk, now all that hungry, many overprijsd eatery along, until we perceive some hope on the horizon: a KFC! Kentucky Fried Chick does not count as native food, so we do (more or less the form), even our best to find something Malay. To our delight we find a KFC near the food court. For less than 4 ringgit per person we both get a tasty rice dish: Michael Judica with spicy chicken and fried rice. Delicious and definitely better than a greasy pot kipkluiven from the states. Many beach we see the rest of the afternoon anymore. The weather is dreary become what we decide to go back into town. Once we (via a detour or two) arriving back at the hotel it was already 5 hours. We have a rest and refresh us, to the evening in Little India to spend. In Little India, or at least the four streets that are inhabited by Indians, it is a great festive bunch. Stalls outside air incense, Indian music, very nice. We eat a pancake sandwich with chicken and egg and ironing later down at a large Tandoori restaurant. There we eat (no cutlery, just with the hands) some naan with chicken. Very tasty! Tomorrow we travel to the Cameron Highlands. At six o'clock in the morning that is. A good reason for some to sleep so early. A sleep address we only booked solid, because tomorrow is a week school holiday in Malaysia. This time we go for sober: a double room with shared bathroom. It will make us wonder ... michiel Dewit | Tags: food court , jungle , malaysia , National Park , Penang , walk Posted in Malaysia , Penang | No Comments » 5 ° 26 'N, 100 ° 19' E 1 September 2010, 14:17 Our hotel room has no windows. We have on our trip had been ever before, only I forgot how difficult that is. No windows in the room you have no sense of time. This morning we woke up later than we thought. On Koh Tao, I was usually around 8 o'clock to wake up naturally, but here be the clock for 10 hours before the doors open beat. Fortunately we had no very wild plans for today. Main activity, so we asked ourselves before, a train ride would be on Penang Hill. So this morning, after a continental breakfast somewhere in the street, towards the bus station. We were at the hotel told that we should take bus 204, but once arrived at the bus stop a man told us that the Rapid Penang bus 10 should be. He told us that the mountain train to the 800 meter summit of Penang Hill to the end of the year out of the running and the only way up is currently in a 4x4 jeep. Does not matter. We welcome bus 10 stepped in and came after an hour (it was not far, but the bus was just long) at the Penang Botanic Gardens. There we met a bunch of really green jeeps complete with uniformed drivers. 60 ringgit for a return. That's pretty much a euro or 15, especially for a ride of 5 kilometers. But after an hour bus ride we wanted not immediately from the field to save. Top So. The ascent was very steep, sometimes 30%. Way we saw some monkeys against those cozy on the railing were playing. At the top the view was initially somewhat foggy, but after a few minutes the clouds moved away and we got a nice view of Georgetown. Atop the hill is also not much to do. There is a Hindu temple and a mosque. Furthermore, a few restaurants closed. After an hour or so back down. Then another hour back to bus 10 (a drive of just 2 ringgit per person, incidentally) and on the way to the Penang State Museum. Of this we read that it was beautiful and well furnished. And that was not too bad. The museum was a lot to read and see the different communities in Penang and Malaysia. Interesting and instructive. For dinner, but back to the food court where we ate last night though. This time no sushi, but what 'Western' food. Chicken with rice, a delicious sauce for chips and for what Judica me with spaghetti. Very tasty. But tomorrow we eat Malay, really! michiel Dewit | Tags: 4x4 , Hill , malaysia , penang Posted in Malaysia , Penang | No Comments » | |
